Tip dressers help extend the life of your copper electrodes, which in turn reduces down time and improves and improves weld quality.
When spot welding, a high forging force and heat generated by passing current through the electrodes causes the electrode face diameter to increase over time. Eventually, the electrode face grows or “mushrooms” to a point where the weld quality is affected. When this “mushrooming” occurs, you will either need to increase your weld current, replace your tips, or dress your tips. Tip dressing can be performed offline with a drill press or at the welder with a hand-held pneumatic tip dresser like the YNR-8F.
*We do not recommend using a file because of the difficulty of creating a flat, even surface on the face of the electrode.
Tip dressing with the YNR-8F requires 90 psi of compressed air. To dress your tips, simply apply firm pressure with the tip dresser onto the face of the electrode. Now, you are ready to dress your electrodes. You can see a video demonstration of the process here.
Quick Dress Kit
Tip dressers have a tendency to be left on the ground or wander off. T. J. Snow offers a Quick Dress Kit that includes a tip dresser with the correct size blade along with a TECNA® air hose balancer that keeps your tip dresser off of the group. An adjustable hanger keeps your dresser close to your spot welder.
If you have questions about tip dressers or would like to order the Quick Dress Kit, please contact T. J. Snow at (423) 894-6234.
