TJ Snow is an authorized distributor of Unitrol’s quality water chillers, manufactured in the USA since 1971. Water chillers play a crucial role in the operation of spot welders by efficiently regulating the temperature of the welding electrodes. Because of the intense heat generated during the resistance welding process, water chillers are integrated into the welding system to maintain optimal electrode temperatures by circulating chiller water through a closed-loop system.

Using Unitrol Chillers for Resistance Welding Applications
UNITROL chillers are designed to handle a large variety of industrial water cooling applications. Over the years, UNITROL has produced a large volume of chillers for use in resistance (spot) welding applications. Our experience in sizing chillers used in welding lines allows us to provide the most economical match of chiller and application.
Why You Need the Unitrol System for Your Welding Line
All UNITROL Spot Welder Chillers are self-contained, closed-loop refrigeration systems which recirculate a continuous supply of cold water virtually eliminating all water consumption. This means it’s unnecessary to use city or well water which presently contaminates your water lines. So down-time for cleaning and descaling of mineral deposits is totally eliminated.
Consistent pressure and low temperature is also maintained in the cooling water, helping to reduce down-time for copper tip replacement as much as 50%. Your weld quality and uniformity is also greatly improved. The result is increased production, more efficient operation, more actual output hours. After all, it’s only when your machines are running that you’re turning out billable product.
Unitrol Chillers Pay for Themselves in the First Year
You will immediately realize an impressive increase in quality production and output hours with drastic reduction of costly tip replacement. As an example, an elimination of as little as 10 minutes per day of tip dressing represents a typical annual savings per operator of over $1,000.00. By adding the elimination of costly water, high sewer taxes, and EPA mandated water processing, you can easily realize a payback of the entire chiller cost within 5 to 12 months.
Another money saving tip: The air exhaust from the chiller can be used to heat your building, and the heat can be exhausted out during the warm months.
Why Buy Unitrol Chillers?
Unitrol has since 1971 only manufactured “automotive grade” chillers which come complete with features that are extra cost or not available on their line of “commercial grade” chillers. And yet the cost to you is about the same. And when you add the cost they charge as options for these features, Unitrol comes out at a lower cost.
These features are supplied at no extra cost to handle continuous operation at full capacity under the harshest of industrial conditions:
Automatic water refill system to keep tank full even with leaks outside chiller (not on model 8000)
Backflow safety kit to prevent water overflow in tank when system is shut off. Kit includes zero pressure water solenoid valve, and check valve (5-ton and larger chillers).
Pressure bypass water system to keep flow through evaporator above minimum requirements. Allows operation at all outside water flow rates (except model 8000 mini-chiller)
Washable air intake filter to keep condenser clean and maintain efficiency
Cleanable filter/strainer on water return prevents contaminants from reducing the efficiency of the cooling evaporator and also prolongs the life of the water pump. This component can be flushed without draining or turning off the chiller.
Stainless Steel “brazed plate” evaporators, mounted outside of water tank. Because of the flow rate through this evaporator the system is self-cleaning Washable filter on air intake eliminates the need to continuously clean condenser coils. This is a major advantage when it comes time for service of the chiller.
Stainless Steel water pumps with ceramic seals
Non-metallic water tank with non-metallic and brass fittings.
5 Ton through 10 Ton Water Chillers
Electronic digital temperature controller. These controllers are staged for maximum efficiency on 15-ton chiller
Low water flow safety system to protect refrigeration components stops the compressor if a fault occurs that could freeze the system
All water passage fittings are non-ferrous to prevent internal rust accumulation
Low pressure and High Freon safety system
Fault indicator lights for Freon and Low Water Flow faults
Ability to service or inspect chiller “hot” with all panels removed

Chillers can be ordered with outdoor kits installed for use in any ambient temperature.

Customizing a UNITROL Chiller:
UNITROL can modify any chiller model to handle special applications such as:
Electrical: 380V or 575V, 50Hz frequency
Water Pumps: Special flow or pressure requirements
Dual Water Pumps: One pump for internal refrigeration, one for outside load
Added Cooling Loops: To chill more than one circuit (Often used for Seam Welding flood cooling)
Split systems to place heat-producing condenser outside of building
Manual water refill with sight glass to replace automatic refill system
Alarms and interlocking systems
Non-Refrigerated Coolers:
UNITROL also manufactures non-refrigerated systems that will cool water down to as low as 5°F above room temperature. These systems include a fine-finned radiator, water tank, water pump and controls. Sizes range from nominal 24,000 BTU/Hr to 1,000,000 BUT/Hr. Contact UNITROL sales to select the appropriate model number.
Water Cooled Chillers:
Standard model chillers are provided with Air Cooled Condensers. UNITROL can also provide any of our chillers with Water Cooled Condensers.
Water Chiller and Inline Booster Master Chart
CHILLERS: These units are self-contained and include a WATER TANK and WATER PUMP. Chillers recirculate water and are considered “Closed Loop” systems.
INLINE BOOSTERS: Boosters use water supplied from an outside source and do not include a WATER TANK or WATER PUMP. Inline Boosters do not recirculate water.
NOTES:
*: CHILLERS include a WATER TANK and WATER PUMP. Other size water pumps are available to produce higher water pressure or water flow rates.
**: INLINE BOOSTERS use water pushed from an outside source and do not include a WATER TANK or WATER PUMP.
***: REMOTE CONDENSER: Models ending with “R” are shipped in two pieces. The inside component contains water tank, water pump, controls, and cooling evaporator. The outdoor component contains compressor, and heat-producing condenser. Customer field installation of refrigeration piping and electrical control lines is required. Dimensions shown are for the inside components only.
#: RESISTANCE WELDING APPLICATIONS: When used to chill resistance welders. This column is calculated to cool up to the listed quantity of 75 KVA or smaller single point spot welders under typical conditions. For other applications consult Unitrol for sizing assistance.
##: These Models are dual compressor systems. They are supplied in two modules, each with the dimensions shown. The total weight for the two modules is as shown on the chart.
MODEL 8000 is designed to chill one spot welder (40 KVA or smaller) or up to two 250A TIG welders. It can also be used for small laboratory processes.
